There are many factors that go into making a successful inclusive classroom or program. Learn more about the components and key points to consider here.
Why should young children with disabilities be included?
It’s the right thing to do and supported by federal and state legislation. In Illinois the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has some great resources to guide us as we look for ways to serve children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
How do we know inclusion is a good thing?
Inclusion benefits each and every child. Check out the research and resources we have gathered in support of serving young children with IEPs with the same age peers.
The U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a policy statement on inclusion of young children with disabilities in high-quality inclusive early childhood programs on September 14, 2015. An executive summary is also available.

Does your program implement high quality inclusive practices?
If so you will want to consider applying for the Outstanding Practice in Inclusion recognition. The recognition will be celebrated at Sharing A Vision 2019. Early CHOICES along with the Early Childhood LRE Stakeholders Consortium will administer the recognition.
Early CHOICES is a Preschool LRE Initiative of the Illinois State Board of Education. We promote increasing high quality inclusive education for each and every preschool aged child by providing technical assistance and professional development to early childhood professionals and families in Illinois. Understanding Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for 3–5 year olds is a brief presentation that defines LRE as well as inclusion. The presentation shares research on why inclusion is important, and how it might look in early childhood environments.
The Early Childhood Outcomes in Illinois Module is now available to learn how to implement ECO and complete Child Outcome Summary form and ratings. This online module offers a self reflection guide and practice completing ECO.
