Not Quite Right
Description: We’ve all heard it before. Perhaps you’ve even described a child as being not quite right. No one means any disrespect. It’s just that there is something about a particular child’s behavior that is confusing or causing problems in their relationships and learning. In this workshop we will identify and examine multiple causations for a child’s behavior. We will begin with by looking to the neurosciences as a means for helping us understand the role of emotions in relationships specifically focusing on the stress response system. Some big ideas about self regulation and regulatory disorders will be introduced. Participants will gain a new appreciation for the developmental role of behaviors such as scribbling as not only precursors to writing, but as well as a means to self-regulate. A sensory processing lens will be provided through which participants will be encouraged to consider looking through when observing, interpreting and designing curriculum modifications and treatment plans. Together we will learn relatively simple strategies such as the importance of a child having postural security prior to performing academic or challenging mobility tasks. There will be something in this workshop for everyone who knows, loves or works with a child who is not quite right. Come! We’ll even laugh a little as we learn together.
